It is impossible nowadays to watch the news or read any magazine or newspaper that does not expound on the ascendance of China as a major political and economic powerhouse in the 21st century. All of this media attention has also helped highlight our country’s cultural, language and trade deficit with China. The simple truth is America does not have enough business professionals, government officials, or academicians with knowledge of Chinese History and experience with Chinese Culture and Language. According to The Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Open Doors Report for 2006, almost 76,503 Chinese students studied in America during the 2005/06 school year as compared to only about 6,389 American students studying in China that same year. When one calculates the number of African Americans from the latter figure the results are dismal.
WHY BSA?
Our goal is to not only help increase the interest among Black students in China, but to provide the support and mentorship that will make their study in the country a very successful and positive experience. Regardless whether you are a business, liberal arts, or science major, studying in China will be a huge plus not only as a resume booster, but to further foster your intellectual maturity, independence, self-confidence, and professional development.
BSA goes through great lengths not only to just talk about diversity in study abroad and internship abroad programs, but we go one step further to provide the support and expertise to help you make the best of your time in China. Whenever possible it is important we have key personnel in our China Program who are persons of color who have lived and/or studied China for an extended period of time. Our current China Program Director has lived in China for six years, speaks proficient Mandarin, and is African American as well as our professor-in-residence for the summer program, Dr. James Gillam, Professor of Asian History at Spelman College who teaches the lecture series on Chinese History and Culture. Why choose BSA for your China Study Abroad? You will be surrounded by a supportive and knowledgeable staff who has your best interest in mind while at the same time living, working, and making new friends from all around the world in a very dynamic, international and cosmopolitan city.
